Small City Heroes: Gary and Evelyn Shea

Gary and Evelyn launched the Toy Drive wanting to help children have a slightly merrier Christmas than they normally would.

18 years ago, Gary and Evelyn Shea, owners of the Cars R Us dealership in Lower Sackville, started a Toy Drive that has since become a yearly tradition.

Gary and Evelyn launched the Toy Drive wanting to help children have a slightly merrier Christmas than they normally would. The Toy Drive collected 20 toys its first year. In the ensuing years, the event has grown into a massive Toy Drive where the community, and even local businesses, come together to serve more than 500 families in need.

Everyone lends a hand - companies and their staff members, parents who no longer get to buy for their own grown children, and even an elderly couple that shares the Christmas spirit by purchasing toys for the Toy Drive, instead of needless gifts for each other.

In 2017, toys were delivered by truck, van, and even a front end loader! It is truly a spectacle to see. The entire showroom was filled to the brim with donated toys! They collected so many that a tractor trailer was required to deliver them to the Cobequid Center! It is so heartwarming to see the outpouring of generosity that is certain to provide children in need with a memorable Christmas. With the help of the Salvation Army and the Cobequid Center, Gary and Evelyn make sure the collected toys go to the right kids, of the right families that are in need. They cannot wait for 2018’s upcoming Toy Drive and are hoping that 2 tractor trailers will be needed to deliver the goods!
